Lacrosse loss annoys coach

London Blue Devils coach John Campbell will be taking radical steps this week when his junior B lacrosse club has a full seven days before its next game.

"I'm going to start bringing in the midgets and some guys are going to be gone," he said last night as the Blue Devils were beaten 10-7 by the Wallaceburg Red Devils at Nichols Arena.

There are still key injured players out -- Joe Pikul and Gavin Moynaugh -- and they should be ready to play when Elora comes to London May 28.

But that's not what is irking Campbell.

"I'm questioning the commitment," he said. "A couple of guys didn't show up tonight."

And he's questioning the level of play of others. That's why some midgets from the London minor system may be getting their first taste of junior B action in the second half of the season.

The Blue Devils dropped to 2-8 on the 20-game season. The Red Devils got their fourth win of the season, their second against London, to stand at 4-6.

Campbell said he has to work to get the team to play smarter with the ball.

"It looks like a track meet -- run, run, run," he said, meaning the players run up the floor with no apparent break-out plan.

He said the team was turning the ball over about 10 times a period with bad passes. He did have a good word for the work of goalie Justin Phelps.

Wallaceburg's Chad Murphy had four goals -- one shorthanded, two on the power play and one on a penalty shot.

The first period ended tied at 3-3. Wallaceburg got two goals on the power play and London got one power play marker and a shorthanded goal.

London had a prolonged four-on-three advantage early in the second period but couldn't score. Worse, they gave up a shorthanded goal and the Red Devils surged to a 6-3 lead. Chad McCabe got one back late in the period, but in the third, Wallaceburg out-scored London 4-3.
