Devils see both good and bad

It's frustrating because the win-loss record is not good, but there are some good aspects to the London Blue Devils' junior B lacrosse game.

The Blue Devils lost 7-4 to Wallaceburg Red Devils on Wednesday to drop to 2-5 in the Ontario Lacrosse League.

"We've got to start beating the teams in our division," said head coach John Campbell, who has an eye on the playoffs for the first time in the Blue Devils' four-year history.

"We're almost at the mid point (of the season)."

It's a 20-game schedule. With 13 teams in three western divisions, the playoff structure puts the three division winners in the first round along with the next five teams, according to records.

One frustration, Campbell said, is the Blue Devils have shown a strong defence, but lack offence.

Another frustration is that it's a young team -- more than half are rookies -- and there are key injuries.

Ryland Fairweather and Gavin Moynaugh are two weeks from returning, while faceoff and power-play specialist Joe Pikul is playing with a nagging injury. He missed the Wallaceburg game, but is to return today when the 4-1 Spartan Warriors come to Nichols Arena at 7 p.m.

"Our key is to keep playing good defence and we'll stay in most games," Campbell said. "We need to score goals."
