Picking a name
By SCOTT ZERR -- Edmonton Sun

After scoring more than 700 entries for a name-the-team contest, Edmonton's pro lacrosse team will get its moniker this afternoon.

A group of eight finalists made the cut with owner Bruce Urban and his inner sanctum of marketing wizards.

Urban will announce the winner at half-time during today's National Lacrosse League Champions Cup final between Toronto and Arizona (the Score/NBC, 1:30 p.m.).

The finalists were Crush, Edge, Energy, Extreme, Freeze, Speed, Torque and Rig Pigs.

The person who submitted the winning entry will receive prime tickets for the club's inaugural season.

"I'm kind of surprised Rig Pigs is there," admitted Urban.

"I heard it at the press conference announcing the team but I thought it was more of a joking thing. It's gained more momentum and it's a serious contender.

"Speed was something we threw around right off the bat. There's three that I really like and in my mind it's a tie."

Urban's staff, legal considerations and the NLL brass factored in the vote.

"We're going to analyse each one," added Urban. "We'll look at each one, see how we can market it and pick one that won't offend anybody."
