Curtis Palidwor was rewarded for returning to his MVP form by being named the National Lacrosse League's defensive player of the week yesterday.

The Calgary Roughnecks 'tender stopped 47 shots in a 13-10 victory over the Colorado Mammoth Sunday that vaulted his club into first place in the NLL's West Division.

Palidwor, who was named the MVP of last year's championship victory over the Buffalo Bandits, but has struggled so far this season, said he was glad his play returned to the level he knows he's capable of.

"It's the way I wanted to start the second half of the season," said Palidwor. "Go to Colorado, get a win and put ourselves in a good position to go for first place."

First-year defensive standout Ryan McNish was named the rookie of the week. He scored two goals -- his first career NLL markers -- and played solid defence in the victory over the Mammoth. He said he's becoming a better player every week.

"I'm like a sponge, picking up this and that from the coaches and other players," said McNish.

"I've learned so much, it's unbelievable."

Buffalo Bandits veteran forward John Tavares was named the offensive and overall player of the week after scoring five goals and five assists in a 23-16 thrashing of Minnesota Friday.
