Coltimus Prime handled the dirt just fine.

One of the horses in the 10-horse field who was a question mark on the dirt, the son of Milwaukee Brew proved himself with a front-running score to win the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes on Tuesday.

It was the first Prince of Wales win for Justin Nixon, one of the many good trainers who got their start at the border oval.

“Learning the game here when I was starting out,” he said, “it’s really special to win the biggest race here.”

It was also the first in the race for jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva, who got to yell his trademark “good luck to everybody” to the large crowd, mainly from the Niagara and Buffalo areas.

“I’ve been riding here for 10 years,” he said. “I’ve won the Queen’s Plate twice. I’ve won the Breeders’ Stakes. It was a very important race for me. I’ve won my triple crown.”

Coltimus Prime was close to the early pace in the July 6 Queen’s Plate, but faded in that race.
