HIGH RIVER -- Davey Shields Jr. had to work overtime last night.
His first bareback horse didn't feel like performing, so he climbed on a re-ride and spurred Weatherly's Lucky Me for a 79.
"I had that horse at Maple Creek earlier this year and was second," Shields said.
"She's a lot of work. She doesn't get his front feet off the ground, and she's fast, rapid and choppy.
"There's not much timing, so you just have to keep moving your feet. Just slash away."
Shields' score puts him in third spot after two performances at High River's Guy Weadick Rodeo.
Shields, who recently bought a ranch just down the road from High River, is chasing down an NFR berth.
Shields won't be as busy as usual heading into the Calgary Stampede.
Travelling partner Russ Hallaby didn't get himself, Shields and two-time Canadian champ Dusty Lavalley entered into Reno, Nev., next week.
"Russ entered us in a funny way, so we didn't get in," Shields said.
"So, Dusty's taken over the books and he's gone crazy entering all these rodeos.
"So he's got us rolling in July."
