Danny Dion is down to his last option.
With Bear's Kid running a disappointing fifth in the $275,000 Grey Stakes at Woodbine in Toronto on Thanksgiving Day, Dion is now hoping Bear Character will be able to get him a longshot Breeders' Cup victory.
Bear Character -- a former Northlands Park-based thoroughbred -- has been pre-entered in the $1.5-million US Breeders' Cup Juvenile, which is Oct. 29 in New York.
But unfortunately for Dion, he has to wait to find out if his two-year-old gelding will actually get into the prestigious race.
"We won't be finding out until three days prior to the Breeders' Cup," said the Bonnyville owner.
That's because the draw for all eight races on the Breeders' Cup card -- the richest program in the world -- isn't until Oct. 26.
If the Juvenile race is oversubscribed -- meaning there are more horses wanting in the race than there are spots in the starting gate -- official entry into the rookie tilt will be based on a points system and by the judgment of a panel of racing experts.
Bear Character might score low marks because he has earned just $133,000 and spent the majority of his year in Edmonton.
He only has one win away from Northlands, which came in a $125,000 stake in Toronto.
