Brian Elliott will get the start in the Senators net tonight when they host the Washington Capitals (7:30 p.m., Sportsnet, RDS) as Pascal Leclaire recovers from a lower body injury.
Leclaire, who is healthy enough to dress as the backup tonight, said the injury is not serious.
“It’s day-to-day,” he said. Though no one will say what is hurt, Leclaire said it is not the ankle which was surgically repaired last year when he was with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
He said he was amused by the media speculation about the severity of the injury. It appeared to happen when a Senators defenceman cleared Buffalo Sabres forward Jochen Hecht from the Ottawa net and Hecht fell on Leclaire five minutes into the second period of the Senators’ 5-3 win Saturday night.
Leclaire came out of the game after the second period and Elliott played the third period.
“You’re always nervous. You never want to get hurt,” said Leclaire. “Things happen, but the next day it felt a lot better.”
The only injury he was specific about was upper body.
“My ear is sore and I don’t even know what that’s from,” he said.
Senators defenceman Anton Volchenkov, meanwhile, took part in the morning skate today and could return Wednesday when the Senators are in New Jersey to play the Devils.
He has been out of the lineup for almost a month with a dislocated elbow.
The Senators will be looking for a season-high fourth straight win tonight.
