Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin appeared to sustain a right knee injury while playing for Russia in a game against Germany on Sunday in the 2014 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship in Minsk, Belarus.

Ovechkin was hit by Germany forward Marcus Kink and lay on the ice for about two minutes before leaving without putting any pressure on the injured leg.

Although he reportedly left the arena in an ambulance, Ovechkin later tweeted a photo of himself giving a thumbs up to tell fans “everything is OK,” according to a translation.

The 28-year-old's injury was being evaluated, with the severity not immediately known.

Ovechkin led the NHL with 51 goals this past season, although the Capitals failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2007, forcing the franchise to fire head coach Adam Oates and general manager George McPhee.
