The IIHF suspended Swedish defenceman Alex Edler for the remainder of the 2013 world hockey championship in Stockholm.

Edler, who plays for the Vancouver Canucks, was ejected from Thursday’s 3-2 shootout quarterfinal win against Canada after injuring Eric Staal with a knee-on-knee hit.

The hit left Staal, who captains the Carolina Hurricanes, writhing and screaming in pain on the ice. He was helped to the dressing room, unable to put weight on his right leg.

Staal is scheduled for an MRI on Saturday, according to TSN.

Edler told radio station News1130 in Vaoucver he had “no intention to hurt” Staal.
