Hockey Canada has officially named former long-time Buffalo Sabres bench boss Lindy Ruff as Team Canada's head coach for the 2013 IIHF World Championships.
Wednesday’s announcement comes a little more than two weeks ahead of the tournament, which runs May 3-19 in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland.
Ruff, who was fired by the Sabres in February following 15 seasons at the helm, won a gold medal as an assistant coach with Team Canada at the 2010 Vancouver Games.
The 53-year-old will be assisted next month by Doug Shedden, who’s currently coaching Swiss A League club EV Zug.
Canada finds itself in Group S alongside the Czech Republic, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, Belarus and Slovenia, from which the top four advance to the tournament’s quarterfinals next month.
