Canada U-18 loses to U.S.

Canada will need to take the long road if it hopes to reach the final of the world under-18 hockey championship.

Canada lost 5-3 to the Americans Tuesday in Brno, Czech Republic, to set up a quarterfinal showdown with the Russians. The Americans, who finished atop Group A, earned a bye into the semifinals.

Hunter Shinkaruk, Matt Dumba and Ryan Pulock scored for Canada (2-2) while Matt Murray made 35 saves.

Riley Barber, Seth Jones, Frankie Vatrano, Matt Grzelcyk and Matt Lane, into an empty net, repiled for the Americans, the three-time defending champs at the under-18 worlds. Collin Olson made 26 saves.

Canada will play Russia Thursday.
