Sweden tops U.S. in Worlds

Patrik Berglund scored twice and Mattias Sjogren had a goal and two assists, as Sweden topped the United States 6-2 to claim Group C at the World Ice Hockey Championship.

Marcus Kruger, David Petrasek and Jimmie Ericsson also tallied for Sweden, which scored three times in the second period and will now move on to Group F of the qualification round and face France on Friday.

Viktor Fasth was stellar between the pipes, stopping 30 of 32 shots.

Blake Wheeler and Cam Fowler scored for the U.S., which will play Canada on Friday. The Americans needed only one point against Sweden to take the top spot in Group C, but it wasn't to be.

Al Montoya made 24 saves in defeat.

In Group D action, Jaromir Jagr and Milan Michalek each registered a goal, as the Czech Republic held on for a 2-1 decision over Finland.

Ondrej Pavelec turned aside 31 of 32 shots to pick up the victory.

The Czech Republic will now play Slovakia in the qualification round.

Anssi Salmela scored, while Petri Vehanen made 23 saves for Finland, which also earned a spot in the qualification round.

Earlier on Wednesday, Norway rolled to a 5-0 win over Austria to earn a spot in the qualification round.

Mathis Olimb notched a goal and four assists for the Norwegians, who stunned Sweden with an overtime win to start Group C play before dropping a 4-2 decision to the United States on Monday. Austria was outscored 13-1 in losing each of its three preliminary round games and will play in the relegation round.

Denmark reached the qualification round with a 3-2 shootout win against Latvia on Wednesday. The Danes and Latvians each finished Group D play with two points, but Denmark will advance because of the head-to-head victory and Latvia will play in the relegation round as the fourth-place finisher in the group.
