QUEBEC CITY -- Alexander Ovechkin joined his Russian teammates here yesterday. But not on the ice.

The NHL's top player this season didn't play in the pre-tournament game against Canada last night because he's waiting on the Russian federation to buy insurance to cover his NHL contract.

"I want to play," he said.

"I don't know how long it will take. They told me it'll be 100%, it will be done, but it may take one or two more days.

"I came to play with my team. When you don't know if you are going to play or not, it's a hard situation," said the player who was not in Trois Rivieres for the Russian's 6-2 win over Switzerland Sunday but joined the team here for the morning skate prior to the game against Canada.

"I'm waiting. That's what I have to do. Just wait."

Ovechkin said he's looking forward to the tournament with the team which was bounced in the semifinal by Finland at the IIHF World Championships last year in Moscow.

"I played in the World Junior when we won in Halifax," he said. "It was an unbelievable atmosphere and I hope it will be the same."

The Russians, who will play their entire IIHF World Hockey Championship in the city which is celebrating its 400th anniversary, arrived here Saturday.

In addition to Ovechkin, the list includes Sergei Fedorov, Alexander Semin, Maxim Afinogenov, Ilya Kovalchuk, Denis Grebeshkov, Dmitri Kalinin and Alexander Radulov.

"It's a big tournament for our country," Ovechkin said. "We have a good team - good forwards. But you never know who is going to win. We still have good young players and it will be interesting."

He's especially looking forward to joining up with Semin.

"Last year I missed him a lot. This year it will be fun because we have three guys on my team and we're close friends. Me, Feds and Semin are great teammates and we'll stick together here, too."
