QUEBEC CITY -- It was a red-letter day for Steve Staios.
He said he was wowed and proud.
"It's a pretty good moment," he said.
"To receive an honour like this and recognition as a leader, makes you pretty happy on a team like this," added the veteran who was named an assistant captain of Team Canada, along with Martin St-Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
"I think as a player you always want to be respected by your teammates.
"You just want to come in and do a good job and lead by example," said the defacto captain of the Edmonton Oilers in their remarkable run down the stretch this past season.
Staios, in his fourth Worlds, was an assistant captain in 2004 in the Czech Republic.
He said selecting Shane Doan as captain again was a no-brainer.
"He's the leader. You can tell he's got the voice in the room already."
