Spezza waiting in the wings

Team Canada has put Senators centre Jason Spezza on standby.

With the Binghamton Senators eliminated from the AHL playoffs, Team Canada GM Steve Tambellini asked Spezza yesterday to be ready in case the club has an injury at the world championship in Austria.

Canada isn't going to bring Spezza overseas, but Tambellini sent word through Ottawa GM John Muckler the national team would like the 21-year-old to be ready at a moment's notice.

"I talked to Spezza and he's willing to go if there's a chance," Muckler said.

That means if Canada runs into injury problems with any of its 13 forwards, Spezza is at the top of Tambellini's list.

While Canada pondered holding a spot for Spezza until the end of the first round of the AHL playoffs, nobody expected Binghamton to be eliminated -- especially since it was the league's top-scoring team, led by Spezza's league-leading 117 points.

Spezza and Tambellini could not be reached for comment last night.

It's believed Manchester centre Mike Cammalleri, who finished second in scoring in the AHL with 109 points, is also on Canada's list.
