Chris Phillips hopes to be flagged by his country.

The Senators defenceman told the Sun yesterday he has spoken with Team Canada GM Steve Tambellini about playing in the upcoming world championship in Austria, and when the roster is announced, Phillips thinks there's a chance his name will be on the list.

While many of the players who have spent the year in Europe have been lukewarm to the idea of playing for Canada, Phillips is excited about the possible opportunity.

"Getting the chance to play for Canada is always special," Phillips said from Gavle, Sweden. "I spoke with Steve Tambellini a couple of weeks ago and we talked for quite a long time. I expect everything is going to work out.

"This is a great opportunity. It seems like there's going to be a lot more focus on the world championship this year because there hasn't been any NHL. Plus, you have to look at this as a last chance to showcase yourself in international competition before the Olympics (in Turin, Italy) in 2006."
