A seemingly insurmountable lead. A desperate comeback. Hockey powerhouses trading chance for chance in overtime, only to set up a dramatic shootout winner for the hosts.

What a way to kick off the 2013 women's world championship — and to set up the all-but-inevitable rematch in the gold medal game -- as Canada and the U.S. battled to a 3-2 shootout win for the home side at Scotiabank Place in front of 9,052 flag-waving fans.

Meghan Agosta-Marciano and Jennifer Wakefield scored in the shootout, while Hilary Knight was the only American shooter to best Shannon Szabados as Team Canada rallied from two goals down to steal one from their arch-rivals.

Things didn't look so rosy early on as the Americans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.

Maybe it was those odd yellow-and-black bumblebee jerseys, but the Canadians just didn't look like themselves in the early going against a U.S. team that was out for blood.
