A stellar goaltender and a hard-hitting linebacker were honoured yesterday as the University of Manitoba handed out its year-end hardware.

Bisons women's hockey goalie Stacey Corfield and football linebacker Cory Huclack were named Bison Sports Female and Male Athletes of the Year for the 2006-07 season at the annual Brown and Gold Year End banquet at the Canad Inns Fort Garry.

Women's hockey head coach Jon Rempel was selected as Coach of the Year for the first time in his three years at the helm.

A Canada West first team all-star, Corfield is the first women's hockey player to be selected athlete of the year in the 44-year history of the award.

The sophomore backstopped the Bisons to the CIS bronze medal, starting all eight playoff games including a shutout against Regina to clinch the CIS Championship berth.

Huclack capped his university career by being named the Canada West top defensive player of the year, the third Bison to earn the honour.

A CIS All-Canadian Second Team selection and second consecutive season as a Canada West all-star, Huclack led the conference's top defensive team with 47 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a pass break-up during the regular season.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers recently signed the Winnipegger as a free agent for the 2007 season.

Rempel was selected after being named the Canada West female hockey coach of the year for the second time.

This season, Manitoba had its best regular season in the 10-year history of the program, setting records in wins (15) and points (30) and upsetting second-place Regina to qualify for the CIS Championships.
