Shootouts should be shot down

OK, here's a joke for you. The shootout in international hockey.

Not much of a punchline, but one heck of a controversy after the Canadian women's team lost the world championship gold medal to the United States in a shootout after allowing a grand total of zero goals in regulation time during the tournament.

The shootout might be fine for breaking ties in regular-season games in the AHL or even the NHL. It could be used in round-robin games at the worlds and Olympics. But it should never be used to decide a medal and the Canadian women were the perfect reason why.

The Canadian goalies had a 0.00 goals against average and they lost.

What in the world is wrong with letting them play to decide the outcome?

The International Ice Hockey Federation should be ashamed.

JUNK HOUSE: According to reports, Barry Bonds continues to work out with BALCO-linked trainer Greg Anderson, who is awaiting trial for supplying performance-enhancing drugs to athletes. Can you imagine Bonds telling the media that they are like reruns of Sanford and Son and then going back to hang out with a suspected junk dealer? ... Not to be an alarmist or anything, but how scary must it be for the parents of football players after seeing Al Lucas of the Los Angeles Avengers get killed on such a routine play? ... Heard the Toronto Raptors will play the Portland Jail Blazers in an exhibition game at the MTS Centre next fall. We're not expecting the Blazers to bring their full lineup however, since most of them can't cross state lines, let alone an international border ... I'm starting to get a little concerned about the security at next year's Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. In the last month there have been enough incidents of soccer violence to make Italy look like Iraq. Last month in Milan, more than 150 fans managed to sneak clubs into San Siro Stadium, which they used on each other during Italy's international win over Scotland. And this week at the same stadium, fans managed to smuggle in Nazi flags, small weapons and fireworks, which they threw on the pitch, hitting a goalie with a burning flare. Next they'll be bringing in sticks of dynamite and it seems nobody is going to be stopping them.

NO TEETH: So far baseball's steroid testing is doing a fine job of exposing a bunch of people nobody's ever heard of. What? Do they only test minor leaguers and also-rans? ... Speaking of also-rans, Mike Tyson will fight a fellow one (Kevin McBride) in June. It's a boxing match absolutely nobody should watch unless they put Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson on the undercard ... So how come Phil gets to tear up the greens at the Masters when I can't even wear long spikes at Tuxedo? ... Some other boxing bouts we'd like to see: Terrell Owens vs. Donovan McNabb, a cage match between Jeff Garcia's girlfriends and Gary Sheffield vs. that Boston fan who punched him ... Honestly, when Tiger Woods made that amazing chip last week and the ball fell in after sitting on the lip for a few seconds, you had to think Carl Spackler was somewhere nearby blowing up gophers ... The Toronto Blue Jays are being investigated by Major League Baseball after four people failed drug tests at their home opener - Ricky, Julian, Bubbles and Slash ... Just wondering. Since Pedro Martinez obviously doesn't want his World Series ring, can I have it so I can hawk it on EBay? ... If I was Randy Ferbey, I'd be buying up every lottery ticket I could find or making a beeline for Vegas because few people have ever been on the kind of lucky roll his team put together at the world curling championship ... Saw a headline this week that said the Stanley Cup was going to court and I couldn't help but wonder how the heck Bob Probert got his hands on it again ... Since the Bombers already have Tom Canada on their roster, shouldn't they be trying to sign this new sensation Ron Mexico? (For those of you who haven't heard, Ron Mexico is the alias Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick used while he was allegedly getting treated for a sexually transmitted disease) ... After Bombers star Charles Roberts said he has a history of being late because he's such a heavy sleeper, we were thinking we should change his nickname from Blink to Shuteye.
