Prior to last week’s Federal Hockey League game between Dayton-Danville, the FHL had been referred to as a beer league.

It officially became a beer league last Friday during the third period of an eventual 4-0 Dayton win.

Just when it looked like Danville’s Matt Puntureri, a journeyman who once suited up for the OHL’s Oshawa Generals, and Dayton’s Jess Felton, a career minor leaguer, were about to drop the gloves, they came together for a hug.

That’s right, a hug.

Then, Puntureri pulled a beer from his shorts and began to chug.

Some of the 850 in attendance loved it. Others hated it. At least one person threw a drink at the pair.

Now, the FHL is apparently throwing the book at the duo.

“Obviously the biggest problem was bringing alcohol on the ice,” Federal Hockey League commissioner Don Kirnan told Yahoo Sports. “If they would have just hugged each other at the end of the season … bringing the beer on the ice is what we’re upset about.”

The Federal Hockey League has four teams – the Danbury (Conn.) Whalers, the Danville (Ill.) Dashers, the Dayton (OH) Demons and the Watertown (N.Y.) Privateers.

Felton has been suspended for the playoffs and Puntureri told Sports Illustrated he has heard whispers he could receive a lifetime ban from the FHL.

“It was my idea, not to brag or anything,” Puntureri told SI. “I’m always pulling silly antics like this, whether it be some celebrations or anything like that.”

The FHL’s salary cap is less than $100,000 per season, according to a Wikipedia. Not much else is known about the fledgling league that once consisted of close to a dozen teams.

And while the price of admission is undoubtedly low, it’s hard to believe those inside the arena got what they paid for Friday night.

Then again, maybe they did.
