'Miracle on Ice' sweater could fetch more than $1 million
|Team USA beats the Soviet Union during the 1980 Winter Olympics.
A U.S. hockey hero’s Olympic sweater could fetch more than $1 million, according to auction experts.
The sweater Mike Eruzione donned during Team USA’s “Miracle on Ice” win over the Soviet Union at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y. will be sold by Heritage Auctions in New York next month.
Eruzione scored the game-winning goal in a come-from-behind 4-3 win that sent the U.S. to the gold-medal game, where it defeated Finland.
Eruzione’s No. 21 jersey will be sold along with his hockey stick and other items from the 1980 Games.
While a portion of the proceeds will go to Eruzione’s family the money will also be used to help fund his foundation.
The upcoming auction could see the No. 21 jersey eclipse the all-time high for hockey memorabilia.
Paul Henderson’s 1972 Summit Series sweater sold for $1.2 million in 2010.
Last year, a Babe Ruth jersey sold for $4.4 million while Don Larsen’s perfect game jersey fetched $746,000.
