NHL free agent Jochen Hecht has signed a two-year contract with Adler Mannheim of the top German league, the club announced Tuesday.

Hecht, who played the last nine seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, failed to sign an NHL contract during the off-season. His four-year, $14.1 million deal with the Sabres ended in June.

It is the third time Hecht, a native of Mannheim, has played for the team. He won two German championships in his first turn with the team, a stretch from 1994-98, and also played during the NHL lockout in 2004-05..

Hecht is expected to make his Mannheim debut Sunday against Ingolstadt.

YEO-MAN EFFORT

Minnesota Wild coach Mike Yeo doesn't have a lot of NHL experience so he turned to a seasoned pro for some advice about how to deal with a shortened season.

Rick Adelman, coach of the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves. Adelman, who has nearly 1,000 NBA wins, went through a lockout-shortened season twice, including last year when the NBA played a 66-game schedule.

Yeo, who has won 35 NHL games, was happy to pick Adelman's brain for about 20 minutes following the Timberwolves workout Tuesday.

"The chance to speak to a person like that with experience and his success, it's great for a coach like me," Yeo told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "One thing I certainly have a value for is experience and success. I have an awful long way to go to reach something like (1,000 wins)."

JETTING OFF

Another member of the Winnipeg Jets has taken a job in another league during the lockout.

Defenceman Mark Stuart has joined the Florida Everblades of the ECHL, the team announced today. Stuart joins fellow NHL defenceman Ryan O'Byrne of the Colorado Avalanche on the Everblades.

A Rochester, Minn., native, Stuart appeared in 80 games with the Jets last season, recording three goals, 14 assists.
