Former Montreal Canadiens captain Jean Beliveau, who was hospitalized after having a stroke last week, is improving.

The Hockey Hall of Famer's daughter, Helene Beliveau, said Monday that his progress is encouraging. She said he is now able to eat and drink and has been communicating with family members who visit him.

Helene Beliveau was also happy that her father has finally been transferred to a private room.

"It reassures us, but at the same time he had great roommates," she said. "It was not a big problem for him. His doctors and nurses expect him to attend a rehabilitation centre soon. "

Beliveau, 80, has been receiving a steady stream of letters and cards from well-wishers during his stay in Montreal General Hospital.

"My father asked me, as usual, if we had kept everything, because during his previous hospitalizations he replied to each of them," Helene Beliveau said.
