Teen hockey player collapses, dies
By QMI Agency

LEBEL-SUR-QUEVILLON, QUE. - A teenage hockey player collapsed and died Monday night after he fell ill during a hockey game in northern Quebec.

Jonathan Baril, 17, collapsed on his way to the locker room in this town 600 km northwest of Montreal.

Baril's condition began to deteriorate about six minutes into the game.

"He sat on the stairs near the dressing room and collapsed," said the town's recreation director, Johanne Paradis.

Attempts to revive him with a defibrillator were unsuccessful.

Police say it's not clear what killed the young man.

"We can't say if alcohol, drugs or consumption of energy drinks had a role to play," said provincial police Sgt. Benoit Denis.

Witnesses say Baril was not involved in fighting and had not suffered a blow to the head prior to his death.
