TORONTO - With the tragic death of Wade Belak, there obviously will be an unexpected sad atmosphere when Battle of the Blades returns for its third season.

Belak was to be featured on the popular reality-competition series on CBC, which pairs hockey players with figure skaters in a figure skating contest.

We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Wade Belak, said Kirstine Stewart, the CBCs executive vice-president of English Services, on Wednesday night.

We send our thoughts and condolences to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

A CBC spokesman indicated that as of Wednesday night, the debut date for the third season of Battle of the Blades -- Sunday, Sep. 18 -- had not been changed.

One of the biggest stories regarding the third season of Battle of the Blades surrounded the addition of the first female hockey player to the mix, Tessa Bonhomme.

Battle of the Blades was an instant hit among Canadian viewers when it debuted on CBC in the fall of 2009. Craig Simpson and Jamie Sale were the winners in the first season, while Valeri Bure and Ekaterina Gordeeva were the champions of the second season.
