THORNBURY, Ont. — The Great One is bringing some of his famous friends to the Blue Mountains this week for the third annual Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic Nationwide Golf tournament.
The pro-am tournament gets underway today at both The Raven at Lora Bay and The Georgian Bay Club.
The 160 Nationwide pros will team up with celebrities and amateurs for this tournament.
They’re split into two groups and they’ll each play a round at the Raven and the Georgian Club either today or on Friday.
The flights begin at 7 a.m. and 12:10 p.m. each day at both courses.
The low 60 (plus ties) pros and the low 10 amateurs (six celebrities and four amateurs) will team up for the final two rounds Saturday and Sunday at the Georgian Bay Club.
The pros will be playing for a cut of the $800,099 prize money while the amateurs and celebrities are shooting for a new Ford vehicle.
The celebrities this year include Gretzky and his wife Janet, NBA hall of famer Charles Barkley, current National Hockey League players Corey Perry, Dwayne Roloson and Scott Thornton, retired NHLer’s Craig Simpson, Matthew Barnaby, Nick Kypreos, Marty McSorley, Brett Hull and Grant Fuhr, actors Alfonso Ribeiro and Jerry Ferrera and football greats Hollywood Henderson, Andre Tippett and Damon Allen.
Michigan’s Justin Hicks won the inaugural Wayne Gretzky Classic in 2008, beating Casey Wittenburg on the first playoff hole.
Roger Tambellini won last year’s event while speed skater Catriona LeMay Doan and Gretzky tied for the celebrity title. LeMay Doan won that division after a scorecard playoff.
Steve Nicklaus, son of golf legend Jack Nicholas, won the amateur division.
Proceeds from the event go to the Wayne Gretzky Foundation that helps underprivileged children play hockey.
