WE ASKED:

SHOULD THE NHL LET ITS PLAYERS PARTICIPATE IN THE 2014 OLYMPICS?

No: Mark Ritter

Isn't the Olympics for amateurs?

NHL players have their chance to play in the Olympics as amateurs at the junior level. No athlete should be participating in the Olympics if they have turned pro. Besides, the interruption to the NHL schedule is just plain asinine.

Let the amateurs have their games back; after all, the Olympics is for the love of the game, not money, something many NHL players forgot decades ago.

We asked:

Do we put too much importance on the world junior hockey championship?

No: Michael Henry

The coverage the WJHC gets is fine, but (during the rest of the season) there is nowhere near enough coverage of junior hockey.

Junior hockey teams are home to young men who do not play for huge contracts. They don't have the big egos that the NHLers have.

On average, each draft has around 75% (or more) of the picks coming from Canadian junior hockey teams.

Why do these kids seemingly get our support only around Christmas and the new year?

Is it the festive spirit? How many people recognize the names of the players while they watch the opening game on Boxing Day?

If you don't support the juniors all year, probably those who played last year and no one on the Russian, American, Czech or any other nation's team, wake up.

Junior hockey is not played only during the Christmas season. It starts before the NHL and the game is just as good or better.

You can take a family of four to a game and eat for half what it would cost you to see an NHL game, alone.

Show your love of the game and watch some great hockey, all year.
