Old Barn lives on in memories

Even though it was like a second home to me growing up, I didn’t get too emotional about the implosion of the venerable old Winnipeg Arena last weekend.

To me that building died when they stopped playing hockey in it and distributed the seats to people’s basements across the city.

There was nothing but an unsightly shell left when they finally packed the dynamite and it was ready to come down, even if it did put up a pretty good fight.

Still, warts and all, you have to admit it was a fun place to watch a hockey game. People who experienced the whiteouts at the old barn will never forget how the building shook with energy. They’ll remember that it was as loud as any rink in the NHL when the playoffs rolled around and they’ll remember that it was home to such beloved hockey stars as Teemu Selanne, Dale Hawerchuk, Thomas Steen, Bobby Hull and Anders Hedberg.

Those memories make the Arena forever an institution.

We don’t need walls for that.

STEROID HUNTERS: Major League Baseball has launched an investigation into alleged steroid use by slugger Barry Bonds. Gentlemen start your asterisks … Victor Conte of BALCO fame says he will provide testimony that a new book about Bonds is full of lies. Is this what it has come to for Big-head Barry? His best defence is the word of a convicted steroid distributor who is fresh out of prison and is the man at the centre of the biggest drug scandal in baseball history? For his next trick Bonds will reportedly assemble an all-credibility dream team including Rafael Palmeiro, Jose Canseco and Pete Rose … Speaking of Charlie Hustle, nice coup by the organizers of the YMHA dinner to get baseball’s disgraced all-time hits leader as a keynote speaker. Love him or hate him, it sure will be interesting to hear what he has to say … Sources say Baltimore Orioles pitcher Kris Benson is looking great in training camp now that he has shed 120 pounds. No miracle diets here, we’re talking about his crazy, publicity-hound, ex-stripper wife Anna … Mrs. Benson went from just another peeler to a pseudo-celebrity after she married a baseball star and she’s the one who wants a divorce?

HOCKEY HITS: Nice move by Los Angeles Kings GM Dave Taylor, tying the can to Andy Murray last week. When Taylor gave Manitoba’s Murray the boot, his team was in playoff position. Now they are 10th and are five points out of post-season contention. Mr. Taylor, I believe Mr. O’Connell can show you the way to the unemployment office … Mike O’Connell, who was rightfully fired by the Boston Bruins this week, might have a claim to fame at the end of the season. If Joe Thornton somehow comes back to overtake Jaromir Jagr for the scoring title, he’ll be the first person to win the Art Ross Trophy after being traded in mid-season … Thornton is approaching a couple of milestones with his remarkable number of assists (81). He needs 13 more to match the number of total points NHL scoring champion Martin St. Louis had two years ago. He probably won’t get to 100, but if he did, he would be only third player in history to do so. The others are Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr. Pretty good company … Toronto sports fans woke up this morning and saw the Maple Leafs nine points out of the playoffs. Hate to break it to you folks. It’s no April Fool.
