Hockey Stars for Hope tourney cancelled

It's hopeless for the Hockey Stars for Hope charity tournament.

Organizers scrubbed the event, which would have raised cash for minor hockey in Ottawa and Gatineau, because of last-minute cancellations by key players.

"We feel terrible about this," said tournament chair Shawn Allard yesterday afternoon.

The event would have been held at the Robert Guertin Centre in Gatineau and was to feature various NHL and other professional players, including some members of the Senators.

WAS TO INVITE CROSBY

Allard told the Sun on Wednesday of an attempt to bring 18-year-old phenom Sidney Crosby to the tournament.

But early yesterday morning, he pulled the plug because about a quarter of the 40 players scheduled to appear told him they couldn't make it.

"We worked as much as we could to make this happen, and it's too bad we couldn't," he said.

The tournament website reported yesterday that "unforeseen circumstances" resulted in the cancellation.
