GTHL postpones vote

A meeting scheduled for today in which members of the Greater Toronto Hockey League were set to vote on proposed changes to league by-laws and regulations has been pushed back. The Toronto Sun reported last week that a large number of clubs in the GTHL had signed a petition asking that the league defer the vote to next September. That would give them ample time to study the implications of the document that came out of a league governance committee report. That report contained recommendations revolving around more disclosure of financial and operational issues by the clubs and more accountability regarding the GTHL and the money it takes in.

"It's a deferral, not a cancellation," GTHL president John Gardner said. "There's a lack of understanding about the terminology (in the document). We need to modify the language so people fully comprehend."

The league has scheduled information sessions at their office today at 9:30 a.m. and Tuesday at 7 p.m. where members can gain more understanding of the motions while suggesting modifications.

"These clubs have asked for six months, so they have time to put a committee together," said Gerry Hickey, who is challenging Gardner for the president's post. "Why the rush? There's some good things in that report, but the board should do the right thing and give them more time."
