St. PETERSBURG, Russia -- The crowd went bananas over Anson Carter here last night. Either that, or it was another racism-in-sport story.
In both the first and third periods of the Worldstars game against the Russian All-Stars, someone in the crowd threw a banana on the ice at the former Edmonton Oiler, who is black.
"It was no big deal,'' said Carter.
"I'm not surprised. Look around,'' he said of the Russian crowd.
It's a story here because of the huge controversies in Europe with racism in soccer and in St. Petersburg itself.
On the very day of this banana incident the English language St. Petersburg Times ran a front page story about attacks on ethnic minorities in the city.
