They’ve been poked and prodded, measured and tested, interviewed and trained for everything from how to cook to how to answer questions from the media.

But there’s really nothing like seeing a blue-chip hockey prospect on a sheet of ice, in a game-like setting, against somebody trying to stop him.

Winnipeg Jets first-round draft pick Nikolaj Ehlers got his first chance to do that on Winnipeg soil, before a standing-room-only crowd at the Iceplex, Friday.

Suffice to say the lad from Denmark, via Switzerland and Halifax, didn’t disappoint.

Early in the proceedings, Ehlers took the puck in his own zone and went end-to-end, avoiding a neutral-zone check with a nifty move, faking a slap shot and going around the defenceman before tucking the puck just inside the post, short-side, on goalie Jussi Olkinuora.

Even Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff, whose cards are generally Krazy-glued to his chest, couldn’t help but light up and crack a smile when asked about the 18-year-old he chose ninth overall in Philadelphia late last month.
