WINNIPEG - With the end of the monstrously long NHL hockey season at last upon us, it's time for Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff to finally make a splash.

This is the most important off-season to date of Cheveldayoff's tenure at the helm of the Jets. He has a new coach in Paul Maurice, and a team that needs a shakeup.

Cheveldayoff and his scouts have done a fine job of building through the draft — Mark Scheifele, Jacob Trouba, and Josh Morrissey all look to be winners — and he has managed to get the core players to sign on the dotted line for long-term deals.

What he hasn't done is produce results — three seasons, three times out of the playoffs, and very little improvement in terms of consistency.

Cheveldayoff is working on a long-term vision, one he obviously shares with Jets owner Mark Chipman, and it's hard to argue against the plan.
