WINNIPEG - Former Winnipeg Jet and current Winnipeg councillor Thomas Steen has been formally charged with two counts of assault and one count of uttering threats.

According to court documents, the incident happened May 1 in the Garden City area and was domestic in nature.

Steen was formally charged on May 6 and the complaint notice was released on Thursday.

Reports of the charges first surfaced earlier this month, which led to the first-term councillor taking a four-day leave from council.

He later returned, but had to resign his seat on the Winnipeg police board while the investigation is ongoing.

Steen has yet to comment publicly on the charges, aside from a brief email statement issued a couple of weeks ago.

As you know I cannot comment on allegations that were reported in the media last week since the Winnipeg Police Services needs the time and the freedom to consider this matter. I have retained legal counsel on this matter and he has advised me to not comment on this, he wrote.

Steen was once the captain of the Jets, playing with them for 14 seasons until he retired from the NHL in 1995.

A condition of his release is that he is prohibited from consuming alcohol or other drugs, or from going within 200 metres of the woman named in the documents.

He is scheduled to appear in court June 23.
