WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Jets, wallowing in last place in the NHL’s Central Division and mired in a five-game losing streak, fired head coach Claude Noel and assistant Perry Pearn this morning.

Former Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes head coach Paul Maurice has been hired as Noel’s replacement. Assistant coaches Charlie Huddy and Pascal Vincent will remain with the club.

The nail in Noel’s coffin was Saturday’s 6-3 home loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at MTS Centre, during which the Jets allowed four goals in the first nine minutes of the second period.

Veteran centre Olli Jokinen said the Jets have been playing scared lately, and the Blue Jackets noticed that on Saturday night.

“All of us should be embarrassed that we’re at the point where we have to change the coach,” Jokinen said this morning at MTS Iceplex.
