Scheifele thinks Hawerchuk will make fine NHL coach

Former Jets star Dale Hawerchuk has been linked in rumours to the coaching job in Winnipeg. It's an unlikely scenario, but Jets prospect Mark Schiefele believes Hawerchuk will be a fine NHL coach some day.

He was with his teammates, watching hockey, as he always seems to be doing when he’s not playing.

He thinks it was during a Washington-New York Rangers game a few days ago, when he and his fellow Barrie Colts heard some news that caused them to stop in their tracks.

His head coach in the OHL, Dale Hawerchuk, was rumoured to be in line to take over the Winnipeg Jets.

“I was with a bunch of the guys and we all piped up when we heard that,” Mark Scheifele said. “It was kind of weird. I had no idea what to think. It totally caught me off guard.”

It turned out to be just a rumour, denied by the Jets, who have Claude Noel going into the last year of his contract.

But not a rumour without merit, Scheifele says, at least where Hawerchuk is concerned.
