WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Jets failed this afternoon in their second attempt this season at a four-game winning streak.
The Washington Capitals scored a pair of goals early in the third period to clinch a 3-0 win over the Jets at MTS Centre. Winnipeg, which was shut out for the first time, fell to 10-10-1 and will now head out on the road for a four-game road trip through Florida and New Jersey.
The Capitals improved to 8-11-1 and are now just four points back of the Jets in the Southeast Division.
Washington took a 1-0 lead into the third period and wasted little time in taking an insurmountable lead. Troy Brouwer made it 2-0 when Nicklas Backstrom won the draw and Brouwer’s shot bounced off a sliding Chris Thorburn and past Ondrej Pavelec.
