WINNIPEG - Al Montoya will make his Winnipeg Jets’ debut against his former team.

Montoya, who signed as the Jets' new backup in July, gets the call between the pipes against the New York Islanders on Sunday night at MTS Centre, giving starter Ondrej Pavelec the day off after starting the first four games.

Montoya has implemented a policy of not speaking to the media following the morning skate on days that he starts but his teammates are excited to see what he can do.

“Anytime you go up against your former team, you’re motivated to maybe prove them wrong for letting you go,” said Jets captain Andrew Ladd. “I know everyone in here will be playing hard for him and trying to get him the win.”

Jets head coach Claude Noel explained the decision to go with Montoya this way.

“It’s good to keep Pavelec fresh and it’s good to have Montoya play against his old team,” said Noel. “He knows them and they know him as well."
