Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec comes clean about DUI

WINNIPEG - Ondrej Pavelec, having crashed his car while drunk, says he was too scared to tell anybody other than his parents.

The Winnipeg Jets goalie, finally back in town to address some of the concerns about his disastrous off-season, took questions from the media about his drunk driving conviction in the Czech Republic.

“It was stupid, that’s for sure,” Pavelec said, Wednesday morning. “I was scared. I was first time in that situation. So I didn’t tell anybody. The only ones who knew what happened was my parents.”

Pavelec says he didn’t even consider the effect of the incident on his ongoing contract talks with the Jets, talks that resulted in Pavelec signing a new five-year, $19.5-million deal — two weeks after he pleaded guilty.

The Jets were broadsided when they learned the news through the media in July.
