Could Jets get Teemu for playoffs?

Winnipeg game for Teemu's return

Could it happen? A rumour — or more likely, a hope — that has been floating around River City for a few months now is that if Teemu Selanne’s Anaheim Ducks are out of playoff contention come NHL trade deadline time and Winnipeg is, the Jets would try to acquire him for the stretch drive.

The Ducks are almost out of contention already, with just 23 points going into Friday night’s game in Chicago. They were 12 points out of a playoffs spot in the Western Conference.

The Jets, meanwhile, went into Friday’s action just one point out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
It’s unlikely the Jets brass would trade a high draft pick for Selanne’s services if they were contending only for a playoff spot. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff wants to build his team from the ground up, and he would be mortgaging a bit of Winnipeg’s future if he gave in to fan sentiment.

Therefore, the Jets would probably have to be high up in the Eastern Conference standings and genuine Stanley Cup contenders for them to even consider going after a rental player like Selanne.

In other words, it probably would be best to say your goodbyes to Selanne on Saturday night.

After benching Brad Richards should the New York Rangers eventually just buy him out?
  Yes.
  Might be a good idea.
  No.
  Not sure.
