WINNIPEG - Chris Mason has a claim to fame as one of only two goaltenders to score goals in both the NHL and the AHL.
It’s not something he brags about, however.
“The story might get better for my grandkids when I’m older but I was just the last person to touch the puck and the other team put the puck in the net when they pulled the goalie for an extra attacker,” Mason said.
“I’d rather one of the guys on the team got it because they need it more than I do.”
Mason got credit for a goal on April 15, 2006 in Nashville’s 5-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. He also scored one for the Milwaukee Admirals in 2001. Damian Rhodes is the only other goalie to score in both leagues.
“I would love to shoot one in the net. I’ve tried it in the minors but I would never try it in the NHL. The games are too tight in the NHL. If you were ever in a situation where you muffed a shot and cost your team a point, I would have a hard time forgiving myself.”
