Marcel Comeau is highly regarded for his scouting acumen and the 2011 NHL Entry Draft is a golden opportunity to stabilize his position within the True North hockey operations hierarchy.
Comeau has been the Atlanta Thrashers head scout since 2003 and he’ll be quarterbacking the efforts at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft this weekend at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.
“Marcel has been part of the organization for quite awhile in a scouting capacity,” said Kevin Cheveldayoff, the general manager of Winnipeg’s new and still unnamed NHL franchise. “Over the course of time, I’ve known Marcel in many different capacities, but one thing that’s always been a coach or a scout was that he was very, very good in communicating and had a very high level in attention to detail. Two things that are paramount in compiling the list and managing all of the scouts that are under him.”
Winnipeg holds the seventh overall pick in the first round.
Comeau was a part-time scout for the Thrashers during the inaugural season of 1999-2000 and became a full-timer in June of 2000.
He also has 15 seasons of experience as a head coach in the American Hockey League, International Hockey League and Western Hockey League and led Team Canada to a gold medal at the 1996 World Junior Hockey Championship.
Cheveldayoff also told reporters on Monday that there are more changes to come on the hockey operations side of things.
“There are several positions that will be open, with respect to moving forward,” he said. “At the draft, a lot of different people will be there. Some of them will be looking for work, others will be discussing some different options. From our standpoint, we’re going to focus on a couple things.
As far as staffing, we’ll wait until after the draft to really round out our staff.”
Kris King, the former Winnipeg Jets forward who now works for the NHL, remains a strong candidate to join Winnipeg’s front office as an assistant to the general manager.
