Barry Trotz will get the chance to continue his coaching career with the Washington Capitals.

The fired Nashville Predators bench boss was hired in the U.S. capital on Monday, ending weeks of speculation about his future.

"I am very excited to join the Washington Capitals," Trotz said in a release. "This is a great organization with a strong foundation and a tremendous fan base. I look forward to working with this group of talented players and the quality front office staff this team has assembled."

The Capitals also promoted Brian MacLellan to senior vice president and general manager after 13 seasons with the Caps as the team's assistant GM.

Trotz, 51, becomes the 17th coach in Capitals history following 16 seasons and 1,196 games with the Nashville Predators as their only head coach in franchise history.

Trotz replaces fired head coach Adam Oates, who lasted just two seasons behind the Washington bench.
