They couldn’t win with Alex Oveckin.

Perhaps they couldn’t win BECAUSE of Alex Ovechkin.

Whatever the case, GM George McPhee and coach Adam Oates are the ones taking the fall for the Washington Capitals lack of success — not Ovie.

To that end, Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis made a strong statement on Saturday after his Capitals failed to reach the 2014 post-season.

Since it appears Ovie isn’t leaving town, the Caps decided McPhee and Oates had to.

Indeed, in a major shakeup in the U.S. capital, Leonis announced Saturday morning that McPhee’s contract will not be renewed after 17 years with the organization. He also revealed that Oates will not be back behind the Caps bench after serving two years as Capitals coach.
