Green turns down Caps' offer

Defenceman Mike Green turned down the Washington Capitals' qualifying offer Sunday, according to the Washington Examiner.
Green had until 5 p.m. Sunday to accept the offer, which would have paid him $5 million for the 2012-13 season. The Caps made the offer, as required under the expiring collective bargaining agreement, last month.
The Caps can still negotiate a new contract with Green, a former Norris Trophy finalist who becomes a restricted free agent by turning down the qualifying deal.
"I think when you're sort of negotiating in good faith and trying to get it done, I don't think anybody's trying to squeeze anybody on the other side," Caps general manager George McPhee said Saturday, referring to Green and RFA defenceman John Carlson. "And so in some ways (July 15 is) an artificial deadline. I think we've had healthy discussions with both players and there are deals to be made there "¦ I think that's something we'll get done sooner than later and they'll be deals that we can live with and they can live with."
Green was limited to just 32 games last season due to an abdominal/groin injury that required surgery.
