The Washington Capitals have signed centre Brooks Laich to a six-year, $27-million contract.

"I'm thrilled to make the commitment to remain a Capital," said Laich, who has 100 goals and 137 assists in 475 NHL games and could have become an unrestricted free agent Friday. He was fourth on the Caps in scoring in 2010-11 with 48 points, including 16 goals.

Washington general manager George McPhee said Laich has emerged as "one of the league's finer two-way players and is just entering his prime. His combination of size, speed, versatility and leadership makes him a valuable part of our club."

Laich, 28, was drafted by Ottawa in 2001 in the sixth round. He appeared in one game for the Senators before being dealt to Washington in a February 2004 package that sent Peter Bondra to Ottawa.
