ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Washington Capitals rewarded defenceman Tom Poti with a two-year contract extension on Tuesday.

Per club policy, financial details were not announced.

"Tom has played very well for the Washington Capitals and has been a key part of our success since he joined the team," Washington general manager George McPhee said. "We are pleased that he has made the commitment to remain a Capital."

The 33-year-old blueliner posted four goals and 20 assists in 70 regular-season games in 2009-10. In addition, he notched four helpers in six playoff contests last season.

Poti, who came to the Caps as a free agent in July of 2007, has totaled 67 goals and 251 assists in addition to racking up 578 penalty minutes in 787 career regular-season games with the Oilers, Rangers, Islanders and Capitals. In 51 playoff games, Poti has contributed two goals and 19 points.
