The 411 on the Caps

, Last Updated: 3:49 PM ET

LAST YEAR: 54-15-13, won Presidents Trophy; upset by the eighth-seeded Montreal Canadiens in the first round of the playoffs, going just 1-for-33 on the power play and inspiring people in Montreal to write songs about Jaroslav Halak.

HELLO: Marcus Johansson, C; B.J. King, LW.

GOODBYE: G Jose Theodore; D Joe Corvo; D Shaone Morrisonn; C Brendan Morrison; C Eric Belanger.

THE SKINNY: With a top line of Alex-Ovechkin-Nicklas Backstrom-Mike Knuble, a second unit that looks to be Alexander Semin-Tomas Fleischmann-Brooks Laich and super-skilled Mike Green on the blueline, the Caps will score lots of goals again. With Theodore gone, the goaltending will be a battle of the 21-year-old kids, Michal Neuvirth and Semyon Varlamov (who switched his number from 40 to 1, for those who find significance in that sort of thing). Did they learn anything last spring? That question doesn’t get answered until April. It will be fun to watch.
