Niagara IceDogs overage forward Alex Friesen signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks.

The Canucks needed to sign Friesen, a sixth-round pick in 2010, before Friday or he would have been free to sign with any other NHL club.

In 62 games with the IceDogs this season, his fifth in the OHL, the 5-foot-10, 189-pound Friesen had 26 goals and 45 assists. He added eight goals and 14 assists in 20 playoff games.
